What is the difference between AC (Level 1 & 2) and DC Fast (Level 3) charging?
AC and DC charging require different equipment to adapt the available power to be compatible with your vehicle’s electrical system. AC Level 1 power is the amount of power available from a standard home power outlet, up to 3.5kW. AC Level 2 power that is available will be limited by your existing electrical service and your electrical panel. Installing a 240VAC outlet or a wired AC Level 2 charger, up to 19.2kW, to achieve higher AC charging speeds should be performed by a licensed electrician. There are also many public AC Level 2 chargers available in the US.
DC Fast (Level 3) charging is defined as chargers supplying power via direct current. These types of chargers are capable of charging at power levels above 20kW. These chargers are typically used for adding some additional range during the day or on longer trips.

Charging at DC Fast (Level 3) speeds above 80% can reduce your EVs range over time and it is not recommended. If you require the additional range of a battery charged to 100%, it is recommended to use an approved AC Level 1 or Level 2 charger to reach charging targets above 80%.
-
What are the different fees I may be charged using a public charging station?
- Idle fees: Fees charged if your vehicle is plugged into a charger but not actively charging.
- Parking fees: Fees charged for the use of the parking spot or to enter the parking facility where the charger is located.
- Congestion fees or Congestion pricing: If there is high demand at a charging site, the price may increase or additional fees may be charged to encourage drivers to reduce their charging time.
- Charging limits – Some networks may limit your maximum charge percentage to increase availability for other drivers. Charging speeds will reduce above 80% requiring significantly more time to add range above 80%.
- Time of Use – There may be time periods during the day where energy is more expensive, and the cost of charging may change accordingly.
